What To Do About This Flu?

January 18, 2013

Dear Ask a Sitter,

I am so stressed about this flu epidemic. I have young preschool and toddler aged kids. They often get their hands into everything. How can I keep them and myself safe? And what should I tell our sitter about keeping them healthy?

Best,

Sneezes and Cough

Dear Sneezes and Cough,

I would like to applaud you on keeping the ones you love healthy this cold and flu season including yourself. Although, I am not a doctor, I have gotten plenty of colds from children of all ages in the last few years and would like to share with you the wisdom I know now that I wish others had shared with me then, including this list of tips for staying healthy.

Public Spaces

I have one golden rule for dealing with public spaces, especially in flu season: wash your hands.

Have a conversation with your sitter about hand washing rules in your household so that everyone is on the same page. A good trick for hand washing is the “Happy Birthday” rule. Sing the “Happy Birthday” while washing your hands and don’t stop until the song does! This “rule” makes washing hands fun and ensures that your lil’ one is scrubbing for a long time.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

You and other caregivers must model for children the proper way to keep flu germs at bay. Make sure to always sneeze or cough into your sleeve NEVER your hand, and wash your hands after sneezing, coughing, or blowing your nose. As we all know, most lil’ darlings don’t like to wash their hands, so try to make it fun! I love to sing the “ABC’s” while we wash hands. I’ve even sung this silly song a time or two:

“Using Your Hands”

Look at the bottom

Look at the top

If they’re not clean we’ll have to stop

Go to the sink and wash them again

And when they are clean we may began

Be Prepared!

And last but not least, a good tip for keeping the flu at bay is to be prepared. Get your flu shot, and verify that your sitters have gotten shots too. Be prepared on the go! When you’re out and about it’s good to keep tissues, hand sanitizer, and wipes handy.

Now that you are armed and ready, have tons of fun with the ones you care for!

Happy Childcare,

Definitely agree with washing hands and sneezing in the right place. Will keep my little one doing that this season.

Great tips!! I get lazy when it comes to washing my kids hands, but this flu season sounds like a doozy, so we’ll be lathering up more for sure!! ps I love Pinterest and purple too!

I don’t have children, but I SO learned my lesson this season already about this crazy flu! And I got it from my best friend’s little girl. These are great tips, and I love how you emphasize that adults have to model the behavior they want to see in children, so powerful!

Anastasia

Love this post. I had a little one who was just miserable last week and we needed to be home with her. No eating, high temp..just awful. Loved the rhyme you shared. THIS may get them to do more about hygiene and washing hands when they should to prevent this!

Christie

Great tips! I had the flu over New Year’s but somehow my kids did not. I am thankful for that!

Cathy

My granddaughter was sick for 10 days. She thought it was cute to cough in my face. It took me 19 days to get over it! I am washing my hands all the time now! Thanks for a nice post. ~Cathy

Good stuff! My son was really sick a couple years ago with RSV, a virus that’s incredibly contagious. Before that I was fairly lax about protecting myself from sickness. I’m way, way better now.

Renee

@Jenn, I hope these tips help you to keep you and your family healthy this flu season.

@Meghan, So happy to hear I am not alone on the color purple and interest, :) . Thank you for the love, hope that it comes in handy.

@Mindy, It is crazy how sick one can get from kids, I should know. Please feel free to share this article with any friends with young children as I feel it is important that we all model for children how to stay healthy.

@Anastasia, I hope your litter one is feeling better than she was last week. I can only imagine the panic and fear that a parent has a young one become so ill. And I agree the post is focused on prevention not what to do when one is sick. Maybe that will be my next post! Thank you for the idea.
