Instead of setting a resolution that I will ultimately fail at, I’m focusing my efforts on new beginnings for Henry. He will be three months old at the end of the month and I have read and heard that by that age it is time to start sleep training your baby to sleep in their crib. I have mixed feelings about this to be honest. I don’t mind Henry sleeping next to our bed because it’s convenient for his middle of the night feedings. He does a pretty good job of eating and getting back to sleep right away. However, I know he can’t stay there forever, and in theory I don’t want him to. So, my husband and I had decided that, after January 1st, we’d begin by having Henry take naps in his crib so he would get used to it.

It hasn’t been as easy as I thought it would be. First, Henry caught a cold over the holidays. Nothing major but he has had a stuffy nose and a cough. This made his naps shorter because he’d wake himself up by coughing. Regardless, I decided I was still going to try putting him down in his crib. It started out great. Henry was showing signs of being tired so I put him down gently in his crib, switched on the mobile, and left the room. 10 minutes went by before I saw that he was asleep. Success! Maybe this wasn’t going to be as bad as I thought it was. Fifteen minutes go by…he is sleeping peacefully, unswaddled (yeah, I thought THAT was a good idea!!) then all of the sudden he starts coughing and jerks himself awake. I froze…what was going to happen next?

Henry loves his mobile, but he’s not so sure about the crib yet!

I expected some crying but what I heard was a new cry, a louder, more ear piercing cry (okay, maybe that’s a little dramatic…) but it was a loud cry. I let him “cry it out” for 10 minutes before going in and sticking a pacifier in his mouth and leaving the room. It didn’t help, but I stuck it out and waited another 10 minutes before entering the room. My mommy heart strings had enough! I went in and picked him up and quickly swaddled and soothed him. He was asleep in my arms in less than 30 seconds! I put him back in his bassinet and decided we’d try the crib again another day.

I know there are probably a lot of things I’m doing “wrong” depending on who you ask. I thought it would be easy to hear my baby cry for 10 minutes, but boy was I wrong! All I know is that Henry and I are doing our best to figure out this whole mommy/baby thing. It’s new to us! We’re doing the best we can and I know, with the help of my husband, we’ll get Henry sleeping in his crib soon enough.
