Remember when…

You sat for hours smiling at your newborn’s face

Your house smelled like a combination of diapers and spit up

The best conversation you ever had involved cooing

It was celebration time when there was pee pee in the potty

Tears fell after saying goodbye to your child on the school bus on their first day of school

Your child gave you their first mother’s day gift of a clay handprint

Mother’s Day meant all the kids waking you up by jumping on your bed and presenting you with homemade gifts and flowers from outside

You spent every weeknight and Saturdays cheering them on at softball games and other activities

You took family portraits like this together

Getting your little ballerinas ready for their dance recital and smiling proudly in the audience

You stayed up all night and early morning while your husband snored ,anxiously waiting for your daughter to return safely home to you after prom

Saying goodbye as you moved your child into college meant sobbing while trying to drive home

You listened to your daughter say,”I do” and start her new life away from you

Seeing you newborn grandbabies lying on your daughter’s stomach made you realize how good life was

Even though the kids are gone and the house seems empty there will always be the memories of remember when.

Happy Mother’s Day to all.

I’m sitting in the family room at the end of January in Christmas treeless room with all the decorations packed away. Just a few weeks ago the house was so lively with the family home. I miss seeing the revolving refrigerator door, hearing the 24 hour humming of the washer and dryer and waiting in the long line for the shower. Just weeks ago I’d get the phone calls saying how excited they were to come home or the countdown of days until they arrived. Then a few days before Christmas I’d watch the door open to one smiling face after another as they dragged their million suitcases inside for the holidays.

Just a few weeks ago my house was filled with Christmas decorations and lots of family. How the time flies!

They wanted that escape from their realities. What they needed was mom’s cooking, cookie baking, clothes washed, a clean bathroom, Christmas movies in the dvd player, and their clean beds to tuck into. What I didn’t mention at the beginning of my reflection was that it took me a few weeks to recuperate after everyone left. When the refrigerator stopped opening because it was empty, the washer stopped humming because it was leaking, and the shower line dwindled because the rod feel off the wall. That’s my reality. I love you guys.
