With all the adult plans and excitements, I can’t forget to mention spending time with the grandbabies! At eleven months they are the most fun. They walk around objects holding on for dear life, squeezing through nooks and crannies all the while watching to see if you were going to chase after them. Crawling around at Olympic speed, moving heavy objects with a single push, waving, hugs and climbing like monkeys on everything and anything they shouldn’t have, have been added to their repertoire. And I almost forgot their dance moves to the counting song that my husband now hums from listening to it so often. Although all these changes are fun and amazing to watch I don’t want to forget almost one year ago cuddling the most beautiful and helpless newborns.

I came back to help out with the babies as my daughter was going back to work. I thought it would be nice to make her transition easier knowing I was here with the kids. Being away for a month makes you forget what hard work it is. Back to juggling two energetic grandbabies and trying to fix a bottle while holding a contortionist. I think my blood pressure rises at least 10 points with each feeding. My twelve hour day begins at 7 am. It’s up and down the stairs it seems a hundred times, tummy time on the floor with time for exercising. Stroller rides for some fresh air take up part of the day. You should see me trying to push a double stroller with humans up a 60 degree hill. What a workout. If I don’t lose a few pounds there is no justice in this world. The hectic nature of the day is forgotten when I look into their big blue eyes and they are looking back. They are smiling at me or talking to me, in baby talk of course, the aches and pains of the day seem to disappear.

With a good night’s sleep I’ll be ready for another day.

I waited anxiously for the pre-Memorial Day arrival of my visitors from the east coast, praying all day that the white Nissan would come safely up the driveway. Well, my prayers were answered when the door opened and one crying baby was plopped into my arms. I was in heaven. My daughter busily emptied her car and filled up my house with baby necessities. My house went through baby clutter shock as it had been a long time since it had seen any of these things. At last, the baby smell that I had missed was back. The twins had grown noticeably bigger and stronger, and they were applauded as they moved their heads bobbing from side-to-side like little circus performers.

It was so nice having the twins at grandma’s house!

We had our weekend entertainment lying in front of us. I volunteered for early morning feedings as my daughter and I tagged teamed again. It was nice to have them to myself in the peacefulness called dawn. There was a family cookout/baby reception that I had spent hours setting up outside only to be moved inside due to cool temperatures. Unfortunaltely we were packed like sardines for awhile indoors. It was a great time had by all and a wonderful welcome to the family for Amelia and Ava.

My stubborn grandbabies entered the world via C-section despite my daughter’s desire to have a natural delivery. Thirty minutes before the unanticipated surgery I was called to the hospital. So in the cold,30 mph Manhattan winds, one of my daughters and I ran across the Upper East Side to be by another daughter’s side before she was wheeled away into the delivery room. We sat in the waiting room filled with tears both of joy and fear. Forty minutes later, we received a picture from Daddy with the two most precious faces you would ever want to see. Friends were asking me, “Aren’t you excited to be a grandparent?” Just the idea of that “G” word was surreal. But now as I look at and hold the babies it’s a mixture of feelings from the many memories of my children’s childhoods and the thoughts of my grandchildren’s futures. Actually holding them I never want to let them go.

So as I embark on this journey of grandmotherhood, housekeeper and all around know-it-all, I’ll be journaling my experiences in my blog. I hope you enjoy The Diaper Diaries.
