Do your lil’ ones have food allergies and struggle with how to deal with those allergies? For some lil’ ones it can seem ostracizing and lead to feelings of loneliness, confusion and the idea that being “different” is bad. For one grandmother, food allergies became the motivation to write a special book for her granddaughter. Joyce Grace wrote Lily Finds a Way in 2011 for her granddaughter but was urged to publish her book because this is a topic that many families deal with. One of our sitters, Joyce’s niece, introduced us to this fabulous book as one of her go-to ways for talking with children about their allergies.

Lily Finds a Way is an adorable book about Lily the fairy who is allergic to sugar, which is a necessary part of the Fairy Dance. Readers join Lily on an adventure to discover how she can participate in the Fairy Dance despite her allergy. Children with allergies can relate to this book and Lily’s determination to participate and not miss out on anything in life. Lily is an inspiration for children with allergies as she discovers that having a food allergy doesn’t mean she can’t enjoy life, it’s about finding a way to participate in activities and finding a balance. For families with food allergies, this book is an excellent way to show how with a little determination and creativity, your lil’ ones don’t have to miss out!

While all children can certainly relate to Lily’s adventure, Joyce has recently written another book with a male lead that may appeal more to your lil’ boys! Contact Joyce (jagwrite@me.com) for information about purchasing a signed copy of Lily Finds a Way ($10 + $1.50 for shipping) or to learn more about her upcoming book!

One of the best parts of babysitting isn’t the fun toys or the television shows or the catchy music. . . it’s the books (though we do like those other things too)! Kids books are AMAZING. From color and number primers to The Berenstein Bears to The Hunger Games series, I find myself wondering why they are called kids books… all the adults I know love them! I know I’m not the only one who loves “kids books,” so we asked some of our sitters for their favorites. These are either books that they read to the lil’ darlings they sit for, or books that they have loved since childhood. Not surprisingly all the sitters had a LOT of favorites, these are just a few of the ones we got:

But Not The Hippopotamus by Sandra Boynton is not only my favorite kids book, it might be my favorite book in life.- Laura

The Napping House by Audrey Wood and Don Wood was my absolute favorite book when I was a kid! I would read it over and over again. The illustrations were like candy to me! Such soft colors and beautiful fluid lines. Plus the story was so much fun to follow. Even when I had it memorized, I would still laugh when each new character came into the room!- Mary

Pomelo Begins to Grow by Ramona Badescu and illustrated by Benjamin Chaud. Gorgeous illustrations and a wonderful, fun story about a little pink elephant learning about the big world outside his garden.- Shea

I Love You Forever by Robert Munsch and Sheila McGraw. I love this book because my mom used to read it to me as a child and it is so sweet- Lindsay

Even the really lil’ ones like a good book!

Reading is such an important part of mental, emotional, and educational development for kids, and is a great entertainment alternative to turning on the television after school. LLD sitters use reading as a way of exploring a child’s imagination and creativity and love sharing our favorites with the lil’ ones hoping they become their new favorites too! Our sitters find that after reading, the kids want to act out parts of the book, create their own adventures, or even write their own stories. It’s amazing to see how reading can spark an interest in so many creative ways.

Share your favorites with us!
