NY Nanny Center & Lucky Lil’ Darlings had our quarterly CPR training with our friends at the FDNY this past Monday, and we’ve got fire safety on the mind!

Like everything else they are curious about- kids are naturally curious about the concept fire. To prevent any accidental fires starting in the home, we wanted to remind parents & sitters of these fire safety tips.

In case of fire:

1) Know your exits of the home you live, or are working in

2) Keep exits clear and working

3) If on first floor of building with security gates on windows, be sure any fire safety windows are emergency exit-ready

4) Know your way out

5) Should you stay or should you go?

-If fire is in your apartment, LEAVE

-If fire is elsewhere in building, depending on of it is a fireproof building or not, it could be safer to stay in your apartment or leave

-In a fireproof building with very smokey hallways, you should close and seal your door

-In a non-fireproof building, it is best to leave immediately

Carbon Monoxide: Odorless, colorless, & tasteless. Make sure home has working carbon monoxide detectors & fire alarms

Kitchen safety: pan fire- use a lid or baking soda to smother it (NOT water- this causes splashing and can spread fire). Don’t ever leave cooking food unattended. Wear short or tight sleeves. Regularly clean cooking equipment

With cold winter months here, be sure heaters are far from blankets, flammable furniture, etc.

This photo is a great list from the FDNY of what parents and caregivers can do to prevent accidental in-home fires. Feel free to save to your desktop for a better look:

Swimming has always been a popular summer activity. However, it is also a dangerous one. According to Parents Magazine, drownings are still the leading cause of accidental death for kids ages 1 to 4, so you can’t be too vigilant when it comes to water safety. There a few recommendations we have to help make your summer safe and fun.

1. If your child is going to be around water this summer, consider enrolling in lessons. Swimming lessons for the child and water safety classes for you will help ensure everyone is comfortable around water and will know what to do in case of an emergency. The American Red Cross offers many courses from ages 6 months and up that can be found here

Always keep your eye on the lil’ ones

2. Always be present. Don’t let your child go swimming without you or a lifeguard present. Teach children to always ask permission to be near the water. Unauthorized access to a bathtub, pool, hot tub, lake, ocean, or kiddie pool is all the same. Make sure they know they need an adult.

3. Pay attention. This one may seem like a no-brainer, but sometimes it’s easy to get distracted. Make sure when your child is in the water you are watching them at all times.

4. Wear a life jacket. If you’re going to be on a boat, dock, or body of water without a lifeguard, wearing a life jacket can help protect a child from harm, but should not be totally relied on for a child’s safety.

5. Be cautious. Even if you are not planning on swimming, be careful around all bodies of water as there is always a chance of slipping in by accident. Cold temperatures, undercurrents, or other hazards can make these bodies of water extremely dangerous to fall in to.

6. Be a responsible guardian. Avoid alcohol use when supervising children. If there are many adults together at the same time, take turns watching stepping away from the gathering and watching the children in the water. Remain alert and awake at all times if you are on watch duty.

7. Last but not least, have a plan for an emergency. Equip your home with the appropriate lifesaving devices such as reaching or throwing equipment, life jackets, and first aid kids. If a child is missing, always check the water first. Call 9-1-1 immediately if necessary.

If you would like to read more about summer water safety, the Red Cross website has many fact sheets, tips, and information available. Following these easy tips will ensure your child’s safety around water. So go ahead, splash away this summer!
